Hans George Fleischner

Hans G. Fleischner passed away peacefully on Friday, November 19th surrounded by several family members in Sanibel, Florida. Born in Vienna, Austria on July 25, 1927, he lived an extremely full life and was always ready with a smile and a story. His family left Vienna in 1938 and Hans attended Downside School in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, United Kingdom. Upon completion of school, he emigrated to the United States, joining his family who had already moved, enrolling at Harvard University, graduating in 1949.

Following service in the US Army, Hans became a naturalized citizen in 1954; he received an MBA from Columbia University and moved to Pittsburgh in 1956 to work for United States Steel. He delighted in keeping the same phone number for over 6 decades. Following early retirement in 1983, Hans kept himself busy by volunteering at St. Edmund’s Academy, serving as its first Director of Development. An avid skier, he spent over 7 decades on the slopes, always happy to be in the mountains and fortunate to meet his wife Leslie in the Pittsburgh Ski Club.

Splitting time between Pittsburgh and Sanibel, FL, Hans loved travelling, the performing arts, watching sports and always trying to find a spot in the sun! Over a long life, Hans visited all 50 states, 7 continents, and nearly 100 countries. He attended hundreds of symphony, opera, and ballet performances, in addition to Penguins games. Hans loved a good story and had many to share with friends, family, and a wide range of acquaintances.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Leslie, as well as two sons, Christopher (Dawn) and David (Julia) and four grandchildren, Kay and Andrew, Margaret, and Caroline. Preceded in death by his parents Konrad and Gabriele, sister Eva, and cousin Susie, he is also survived by his cousin Liz Rosenman and her family.
