Eunice Lillian Barfield Bremner
August 22, 1919 – August 11, 2022

On Thursday morning Heaven gained another star…
In one of the stars, I shall be living
In one of them, I shall be laughing
And so it shall be, As if all the stars were laughing
When you look at the sky at night.
The Little Prince Antoine de-Saint Exupery
……..and there is a sweetness in the laughter of all the stars
and in the memories of those you love.
Eunice has joined her family and friends in God’s Heaven. She was born on August 22, 1919, in Gardner, FL, the daughter of Marshall Jackson Barfield and Dorothy Victoria Lynch Barfield. Her father worked with Dowling and Camp, Inc, moving his family around Florida building sawmills and clear-cutting pine flatwoods, finally settling in North Fort Myers at the Slater Mill in 1928.
After graduating from Fort Myers High School in 1936, She joined her sisters Berne and Agnes at Lela Summerlin Johnston’s garage apartment on the corner of Fowler and Second St., from there the girls walked to work in downtown Fort Myers. Eunice worked at the fruit packing offices on the downtown piers. She then began working at First Federal Savings and Loan before becoming a legal secretary for Frank C. Alderman, Jr. at the First National Bank Building on First Street.
In 1955 Eunice met her future husband, Alexander Watson Bremner, while picking up her friend, Joyce Turner, for lunch from the Fort Myers News-Press Offices in the Collier Arcade.
She and Alex were married on November 7, 1956 and welcomed their biggest surprise, daughter Alexandra Ross in 1958.
After working for over 40 years, Eunice retired and enjoyed traveling, being with her friends, volunteering in her daughter’s Head Start class and anything else Alexandra was involved in. She was also a Meals on Wheels volunteer for Community Cooperative.
Eunice was a gift to us all. She was wise, kind, patient, loving, stylish, witty, and beautiful inside and out. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Surviving family includes her daughter, Alexandra, her great niece, Elizabeth Ann Carter, her nephews, Lionel LeRoy Barfield, Jr., C. Hodges Harty, III, Jackson Sidney Harty and their families.
Eunice was predeceased by her husband Alexander Watson Bremner and her siblings Lionel LeRoy Barfield, Bernese Barfield Davis, Agnes Barfield Harty and Marshall Jackson Barfield.
A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. There will be valet parking for the service on the corner of First and Jackson Streets.
