Tribute

Alexandra R Spungin (Alex/Dede) was called back to her Heavenly home on February 23rd, 2023
at the age of 71 in Fort Myers, Florida. She is survived by her beloved brother Mark, niece Katheryn,
nephews David & Michael, & 3 great grand nieces and 1 great nephew. Alex was predeceased by her
mother and father (Jane and Phillip Spungin), as well as numerous members of her extended family.
Alex entered into this world on March 22nd, 1951 in Worcester Massachusetts to Jane and Philip
Spungin. She had one sibling, Mark, whom she loved and dotted on from the very beginning. When Alex
was still very young, the family moved to New York, where most of her childhood memories were made.
Her parents opened a carry out food service, which became a staple of Alex’s youth. She spent a
lot of time there helping out, much to the delight of all her friends , who would regularly stop by for
their famous “nice and greasy” sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. Eventually upon her fathers passing,
Alex took over the business, where she really solidified her talents and love for that industry, and quality
cuisine in general.
The family eventually moved to Maryland, but after a number of years, Alex ultimately knew she wanted
something different. In the early 90’s , she packed up all of her belongings and drove south, until quite
literally there was no more ground to drive on. Upon feeling satisfied and at peace with this ocean view,
Alex realized she had arrived in Ft. Myers, Florida, where she began her life anew.
She began work as a deli clerk at Publix (naturally), which she loved and excelled at. It wasn't long
before Alex received several promotions, eventually working her way up to becoming the Deli
Supervisor of several regional Publix store locations. Alex loved her job, and so did her family, as she
made sure to spoil them with delicious Boar’s Head Honey Baked Ham (and many other delectable deli
items).Alex’s career spanned 22 years before retiring in the mid 2000’s.
Alex’s favorite pastime was taking cruises with her mother, Jane, (before she passed), spending time
with friends and family , usually on the beach, and usually with a margarita in one hand, and a grouper
sandwich in the other.
As Alex did not have children of her own, her niece and nephews were the apple of her eyes. She
loved having them come visit, and since they lived out of state, it was usually for weeks at a time. The
family's most cherished memories were summers spent with her brother,(Mark) niece, and nephews
on the shores of Southwestern Florida, taking in the sun and sand which she is surely enjoying now.
She will be sorely missed by all those who knew her ;and her tenacity, wit, and infectious laugh will
never be forgotten. Alex would want us to take comfort in knowing she is rejoicing in reunion with her
mother and father, sipping margaritas along Heaven's coastal shores we’re sure.
A lover of animals, she absolutely adored her faithful cat Bubby, and beloved dog Murphy (from her
youth). As such, we ask that In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Animal Refuge Center
