James was an avid gardener, he spent countless hours in his garden. All of his loved ones knew of his gardening passion.  His children and grandchildren have fond memories of time spent with him in his garden.  He was President of Indiana Wildlife Federation. He was awarded the Presidents award of the Wildlife Conservation.  James and wife Rebecca shared 30 years in Wildlife Conservation.  James loved the outdoors.  Ice fishing became his job in the winter months, and fishing in Canada with his buddies once a year in early summer was a time he always looked forward too.  James loved camping with his family and took them on many memorable camping trips.  Everyone that knew him, knew that he was a great bon fire starter.  To all those that came in contact with him knew him as a gentle and unselfish man.  He was a wonderful Husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  Highly respected by all.
He was a member of bricklayers and masons Local 4 Union for 30 years, which for most of those years he worked for Brown and Brown contractors.  He ushered Notre Dame football games for 27 years, he loved his football.  Every game was a good game to him.  He received a gold card for future home games the year he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.  James was 50 years old at that time.  He did well for many years before MS started taking over his body.  He fought hard with many stays in the hospital and rehabilitation centers during his 26 years with MS.  But it didn't stop him from traveling to all 50 states with his wife Rebecca.
James was a devout Catholic and attended St. Monica's Catholic church in Mishawaka, IN until he and Rebecca moved to Fort Myers, Fl in May of 2012.  Since the move they have attended St. Cecilia Church in Fort Myers.
One of the things James was great at during his time with MS was doing puzzles.  Any one who would come to visit could not resist doing puzzles with him.
James was the pillar of the family and gave strength and wisdom to all of us. He will be greatly missed.
There will be a viewing for family members at Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home at Noon on January 12, 2018, with a Funeral Mass for all family and friends at 2:00 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.  Dinner following at Leisure Estates Club House.
